Determining Your Skin Type - A Handy Skincare Guide

Did you know that different skin types need different care? If you have oily skin, your skin care routine will be different than someone with dry and damaged skin. Similarly, if you have sensitive or combination skin, you’ll need to take more care with the products you use than someone with normal skin.

Finding the right skincare products can be tricky. Here are some clues to help you determine your skin type and build a routine that works for you.

Normal

Normal skin is neither oily nor dry and the the pores are not overly visible. Your skin has a smooth, even texture, as it reflects light evenly, and isn’t red, blotchy or particularly sensitive. This skin type very rarely has breakouts, and the T-section (chin, nose, and forehead) may only become oily on a very hot day. Younger people are more likely than older people to have normal skin.

To take care of normal skin, most natural skin care products are fine, and you only need a light cleanser and moisturizer to achieve great results. Avoid contact with strong chemicals that could dry out your skin, and make sure to use sun protection to prevent free radical damage and premature aging.

If you determine that your skin type is normal, your skin will benefit from any one of our range of natural and nourishing skin care products. Ayr Skin Care’s Pure Moisture face cream is perfect for normal to dry and sensitive skin types, and can be the perfect balance of hydration and protection from trans-epidermal water loss from the environment.

Oily

Oily skin is shiny, thick, and has large pores that are often clogged. This results in blemishes, such as blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples. Oily skin is especially affected heat, humidity, and hormonal changes.

If you determine that your skin type is oily, wash your face no more than twice a day, and avoid scrubbing it too vigorously. It’s also important not to pick, pop or squeeze pimples, as they can become infected and take longer to heal.

Look for skin care products labeled “non-comedogenic”, such as our Virgin Marula Oil, as these products won’t clog your pores. While it seems counterproductive to use an oil on oily skin, marula oil is actually very effective at regulating natural sebum, and may help reduce the oil production of your skin. Apply to clean skin, only a few drops are needed. Take advantage of our Reveal Exfoliating Foam Facial Wash with Alpha Hydroxy Acids to keep your skin clean and clear, while avoiding harsh bead exfoliators that can make breakouts worse. In fact, we have designed all of our products to be light, mild, and nourishing, so you can be confident that they will prevent irritation, reduce inflammation, and help to balance the oils in your skin.

Dry

Dry skin has pores that are barely visible, feels tight, and may be flaky. Dry skin is affected by wind, indoor heating, and dry climates. Dry skin also tends to be quite sensitive — easily developing redness and itching, and reacting to harsh and fragranced products. Extremely dry skin may also become rough and scaly, especially on the back of the hands.

If you determine that your skin type is dry, use the most natural skin care products you can find and avoid exposing your skin to harsh chemicals and the sun. Good products for dry skin include natural shampoos and conditioners on your hair, mild soaps on your skin (all of our soaps are mild and anti-irritant, and contain natural glycerin for hydration), and wearing gloves while cleaning, fixing, doing pottery, and so on. It’s also a good idea to limit shower frequency to once a day, not to stay in there for too long, and avoid scrubbing to let the natural oils build up.

We have about a 3 minute window to seal in moisture after a bath or shower. This goes for your face as well as your body. After showering, make sure you apply a face moisturizer, like our Pure Moisture Nourishing Face Cream, which was designed for dry and sensitive skin, and even add an extra drop or two of marula oil for extra moisture. For your body care after showering, cover yourself with a dry body oil, which will help keep your skin soft and moisturized all day long. Try our Tranquility Moisturizing Hand Cream or Tranquility Dry Body Oil after bathing and whenever you feel your skin is getting too dry.

Combination

To determine your skin type as “combination”, you would notice an oily T-section with occasional breakouts, combined with dry cheeks, temples and eyes. “Combination” also applies to people whose skin changes with the climate and the season — oily in summer and dry in winter, for example.

The best care for combination skin involves treating each part of your face according to what it needs. Use gentler cleaners and some moisturizer on your cheeks, and a stronger cleanser and toner on the T-zone to cut through the oil and tighten the pores.

If you determine your skin type changes with the climate and season, you can adjust your skin care routine to match your skin’s needs at the time. The advantage of our Reveal Exfoliating Foam Facial Wash with Alpha Hydroxy Acids is that it is as gentle as it is effective — so you can use it on the oily as well as dry parts of your face for balanced hydration and renewed, healthy skin. Marula Oil is the perfect solution for those dry areas of your face too, and can be blended with your night cream for extra moisture, or merely dabbed onto the dry forehead.

Sensitive

Sensitive skin reacts easily to certain products and ingredients, producing unpleasant redness, itching, burning, and dryness. It’s helpful to recognize which ingredients are triggers so you can avoid them, although by using most natural skin care products, you’ve got a much better chance of success. Sensitive skin can become irritated easily by things that you cannot see. “Perfume” for example, on ingredient lists, contain many chemicals that are not listed. A cocktail of things are hidden in perfumes, which can cause the skin to react. Choose skin care products that have no perfume on their ingredients, or colors too, which have many irritants in them. Ayr Skin Care products were formulated with sensitive skin in mind, and all of our products are mild and natural so as to create healthy, calm skin. They contain no perfume, no artificial colors, and are easy on the skin. If you determine that your skin type is sensitive, you’ve come to the right place!

Mature

Mature skin (those over 50) tends to be dryer, duller, rougher, and often features the sagging and fine lines that come with years of sunshine and laughter. For best results, use a light cleanser and follow with a treatment and moisturizer — especially those containing tightening and anti-aging properties. Our Pure Moisture Nourishing Face Cream is ultra-hydrating, boosts circulation, and supports cell regeneration to make your skin smoother and more radiant. One of the areas of the skin often overlooked, but certainly on the radar for mature skin is the under eye area. Catch your eyes feeling itchy, dry, discolored or with sagging bags? If so, Awaken Eye Serum is for you! It will help keep the moisture in the sensitive under-eye area, and make your eyes awaken to face the day!

Other factors

Once you’ve determined your skin type, it’s important to realize that there are other factors that influence the way your skin responds and how to best take care of it. We’ve mentioned age and climate as two of these factors.

However, all skin types benefit from adequate hydration from drinking plenty of water, and the opportunity for regeneration that comes with a good night’s “beauty sleep”. Your skin will benefit from a diet rich in vitamins and minerals (fresh fruit and veggies) as well as protein, healthy fats and protecting your skin from direct sun exposure helps to prevent damage from the UVA and UVB rays.

Finally, use the most natural skin care products and makeup to nourish rather than irritate and damage your skin. All of our skin care products are natural, nourishing, and gentle on your skin for a lifelong, confident glow.
