Water for Beautiful Skin: How Drinking Water Skin Care Works

When you think of “skin care,” you might imagine cleansers, moisturizers, and face masks. Not many people are aware of the power of using simple drinking water for beautiful skin. In fact, though, it’s a secret weapon for natural beauty. Here are some ways to practice good drinking water skin care.

Meet the Gentlest Cleanser

Pure water is one of the most refreshing things you can do for your skin. The chemistry of water makes it especially well-suited to carry off dirt and grime from your face without irritating you or stripping your skin of its natural oils. When we have no makeup on our skin, water goes a long way to refresh naturally and simply.

Like all cleansers, a little goes a long way. The point isn’t to soak in it like a bath (and become a raisin!), but to rinse and rejuvenate. Try splashing your face with water first thing in the morning when you get up, and again in the evening before bed. You can also have a splash in the middle of the day to clear your head and center yourself. It’s surprisingly effective!

It also just feels good. Refreshing your face with water is a peaceful little ritual and the perfect way to start or end your day.

Cleanse Your Face and Body

You can use cold, cool, or warm water for beautiful skin—whatever you like. Use soft, circular hand motions to gently rinse your face and any other parts of your body you want to cleanse. This will not work if you are wearing any makeup or sunscreen, oils, etc. You don’t want to be rubbing your skin vigorously. Use this method after a regular cleanser, or just to refresh when you are going without makeup for the day. When you’re done, lightly pat your skin dry with a towel. Again, avoid harsh wiping. This is a little detail that we often overlook, but it makes a big difference over the course of the day. Excessive rubbing leads to over-dryness. The same goes for your hands whenever you wash them: Pat dry; don’t rub.

In the mornings, many people do a sort of “water cleanse” in the shower. It’s a great way to just make an easy day in your schedule. Splash while in the shower, gently dry when you get out, and follow up your water cleanse with your favorite moisturizer. If you’ll be going outside, add a low-irritant sunblock for protection throughout the day. At nighttime, use a traditional cleanser to help remove the grime and the sunscreen, follow up with targeted treatments and moisturizer to nourish and regenerate your skin overnight.

Drink Plenty of Water

One of the best ways to use water for beautiful skin is to drink it, and drink it often. You probably hear that all that time, and it’s absolutely true. Your skin is an organ, just like your heart and lungs, and it needs plenty of water to do its job. Getting enough water each day hydrates, detoxifies, and renews your body from the inside out. Sometimes, “drinking water skin care” is as simple as drinking water.

Keep water at your desk as you work. Order it when you go out to eat. You don’t have to give up your other drinks; just make sure you usually take them with water. You can also eat fruits and vegetables with a high water content, including cucumber, watermelon, tomato, lettuce, celery, apple, and citrus to give your skin a healthy glow. Your skin will thank you for it!

A good rule of thumb is that if your urine comes out clear or almost clear, you’re doing fine. If it’s especially yellow you’re dehydrated, drink a little more for the next few hours.

Detoxify and Protect Your Skin with Heat and Cold

One of the most powerful cleansing properties of water is how differently your skin reacts to it depending on its temperature. Hot is relaxing and nourishing. Cold is invigorating and protective. When it comes to using water for beautiful skin, hot and cold water work best together as a cycle.

Saunas and steam rooms open the pores of your skin, encouraging your body to sweat out toxins. Try to go at least a few times a month, but make sure you limit your time in the sauna to that recommended by your health practitioner, and drink plenty of water before and after. Once you’re done, shower immediately to remove the toxins and avoid reabsorbing them, and finish with cool or cold water to close and tighten your pores, sealing the moisture barrier. A nice treat to do for yourself, (and you know we are all about self-care and nurturing the body!) is to have a clean washcloth in a baggie in the refrigerator. You can soak it in cucumber too, if you like. This makes a wonderfully refreshing cold towel after a sauna to help close up the pores.

You can also practice a miniature “sauna” version of this at home. On a Saturday or Sunday, or when you have time to relax, give yourself a facial cleanse and mask, remove with a steaming hot washcloth, and gently wipe away. Follow this up with the cold washcloth from the refrigerator for an even better spa treatment.

Revive the Under-Eye Area with Cold Water and Ice

Here’s a little-known way to use water for beautiful skin, and it’s so easy to do!

If you’ve had a late night and wake up with puffy eyes, simply make a cold pack using crushed ice or chilled water in a small, leak-proof bag. Wrap that in a damp cloth, and apply under each eye for 10 minutes. Then gently pat the area dry and dab on some eye serum such as our Awaken Revitalizing Eye Serum for all-day refreshment. The caffeine and cucumber and chamomile extracts in our eye serum will keep your eyes alert and awake all day long!

The Quality of Your Water Matters

Water quality matters. Whether you’re rinsing with it, steaming in it, or just drinking it, the best drinking water skin care begins with pure spring water, or filtered water that’s free of chlorine and other chemicals.

For showering and bathing, use soft water to leave your skin softer and healthier. Soft water filters are available if your tap water supply is hard. Another trick is to add a half a cup of sea salt crystals into your bath water to help counteract the chlorine. Ocean water is also excellent for beautiful skin and hair, as it is rich in nutrients and marine botanicals like sea lettuce and red algae that cleanse and nourish without causing your skin and hair to dry out.

For drinking, use purified water that’s free of chemicals but still contains all of its trace elements. If your water filter removes these minerals from the water (such as reverse-osmosis filters), you can add a pinch of pink rock salt to your glass to restore some of these natural ingredients.
