Natural Alternatives to Dermal Fillers & Facial Injections

Everyone wants to look good, but not too many are willing to go under the needle for a facelift. Aging gracefully is a balancing act of taking care of ourselves inside and out. However, here in California (which admittedly is the plastic surgery and facial-procedure capital of the world!), it’s easy to compare our self-image with touched-up magazine photos or to fall for every new product or food that promises a more youthful appearance, faster.

Wouldn’t it be great to have less-obvious wrinkles without the time, cost, and dangers of injections? What if we told you how you can? We will take a look at the ingredient acetyl hexapeptide-8, and why we have chosen to include it, and other peptides, in our luxury skin cream formulations. Read on to learn about one of the best alternatives to dermal fillers. You may be surprised at what it does!

First, a Little Lesson on the Skin Barrier

The main function of our skin is to protect our bodies by forming a barrier that is difficult to penetrate. The skin barrier does a very good job of keeping things out of our bodies. If it didn’t, then we would all soak up the water from our bathtubs like sponges!

The challenge for chemists is finding a way to deliver the active ingredients or those that feed the skin through the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of the skin). Permeation through the skin is difficult enough through the top layer, but getting ingredients down another layer is almost impossible without a perfect delivery system. This is where many petroleum-based ingredients have really shone in the past.

To understand how we’ve chosen natural alternatives to fillers and facial injections, it’s important to know the foundation and the why. Historically, ingredients like propylene glycol or butylene glycol were added as solvents to skin care products, acting as penetration enhancers for ingredients, helping them go deeper into the skin. The only problem is that recent studies clearly show the toxicity of petroleum-derived ingredients like these and their impact on the skin, on the production of collagen, and on hydration over time. There is a strong correlation between cancer and petrochemical products. These products are also highly irritating to many people, causing rashes, redness, and nasal passage pain, resulting in skin care that is not safe for lasting vitality in the skin.

Despite the dangers, the FDA has approved 1,2 diol (propylene glycol) for general use in cosmetics and many other industries. This compound is best removed from your skin care routine if you are currently using products containing it.

What is the answer to this problem? How can we get active ingredients like peptides into the layers of our skin without relying on petrochemicals to help them penetrate?

The answer is 1,3 propanediol. This vegetable-based ingredient is easily confused with 1,2 diol (propylene glycol). Let’s look at the ingredient in depth. Here are the key differences.

Propanediol 1,3

  • Is 100% natural, renewable, and derived from vegetables and typical sources are fermented palm or corn
  • Can be used to replace petroleum-based glycols such as propylene glycol and butylene glycol as a skin penetrator and solvent
  • Acts as humectant like glycerin but is not as sticky in formulations
  • Boosts efficacy of preservatives
  • Improves skin moisturization without irritation, providing safe skin care

I deviated into a sideline on penetration enhancers in skin care, but I am always concerned with safety, and, in my mind, propylene glycol is one of the worst ingredients. I wanted to clearly explain what it was and why you should not confuse it with the eco-certified vegan alternative that we use, which is the 1,3 propanediol. This ingredient allows the peptide to penetrate deep enough to work so that this expensive ingredient does not just sit on the surface of the skin.

But What About That Natural Alternative to Fillers and Facial Injections?

Argireline® NP (Non-Paraben version of Acetyl hexapeptide-8) is a peptide (formerly named acetyl hexapeptide-3) that is effective in the reduction of the depth of existing facial wrinkles. This safe synthetic not only works on existing wrinkles but with regular use, has demonstrated effectiveness against their formation.

In clinical studies of twice-a-day treatment, the severity of wrinkles around the eyes decreased up to 17% after 15 days and 27% following 30 days of treatment. Not only does this formula begin working right away, but over time this powerhouse peptide helps build more capillaries, which nourish the skin at the cellular level. Healthy elastin and fibroblasts, which make collagen, are created, making the skin more elastic and plump.

More Studies on the Best Botox Alternatives

Independent studies showed that in some cases, Argireline® reduces wrinkles by up to 30% after 30 days of application while other users experience a reduction of lines of less than 10% over the same time span. The peptide solution has demonstrated a decreased appearance of wrinkle-volume by 20.6% and a reduction of wrinkle-length by 15.9% on average. A study conducted in 2002 concluded that when Argireline is applied to the epidermis in concentrations higher than 5%, it effectively reduces lines and wrinkles by up to 30% after 28 days. The ingredient is a safer skin care ingredient than injectables and still has a relaxing effect on wrinkles.

We love working with Argireline® and use it at a high enough dose to be effective in our Restore Night Cream as well as our Pure Moisture Day Cream. This ingredient is only one of a cocktail of potent actives in each of these creams, and we use a unique formulation, including the 1,3 propanediol mentioned above, to make sure that the peptides and other actives go to where your skin needs them the most. You’ll get great results with zero side effects. It’s the best combination of safe synthetic and organic oils for a wonderful formula your face will love! Plus, you’ll be able to enjoy a natural alternative to needles, dermal fillers, or expensive doctor visits required.

We hope that you enjoyed this little dive into the science of the skin and the more natural options to facial surgery that our products offer you. Ayr Skin Care combines many peptides in all of our creams and anti-aging eye serum, because they all offer unique results for your skin.
