Mature skin is even more susceptible to loss of moisture and a decrease in the production of hyaluronic acid as you age. Sure, hyaluronic acid can be used in skin care. In fact, we put hyaluronic acid in most of our products, but we have also found two sugar-based ingredients that help skin to retain moisture and may even stimulate your skin to increase production of hyaluronic acid and collagen: Saccharide Isomerate and Beet Sugar Extract. Sugar is for More Than Just Baking

You might never think that adding sugar to a skin care product could make a difference, but it can! I’m not talking about adding the sugar you have in your kitchen, but about the unusual addition of different plant-based sugars, or glucosides, that we use in our lab when creating Ayr Skin Care products. While there are many traditional moisturizers available, we are always looking for science to support new cutting-edge ingredients. This was why we got very excited a few years ago about the addition of sugars, such as beet-derived saccharide isomerate, to our formulations.

So what is so exciting about these sugars and what unique anti-aging properties do they bring? The true key to the look of healthy skin is hydration. Skin becomes dry for two reasons - prolonged exposure to the elements and physical and chemical changes to the skin as a result of aging or using drying skin care products.This can be improved by either stopping the loss of water from the skin or by restoring lost moisture.

Gluten-Free Saccharide Isomerate

Saccharide isomerate is usually created from a number of plants, including wheat, but we choose to use only gluten-free sources, such as those derived from the beet plant, in our products.

Saccharide isomerate is deeply moisturizing because of its unique composition, which is similar to that of the carbohydrate complex found in human skin and on its unique ability to bind to skin cells, creating a moisture reservoir. It has been shown to:

  • Reduce Wrinkles
  • Hydrate in hours
  • Calm Stressed Skin
  • Increase Hyaluronic Acid Production

Both the Université Grenoble Alpes and the Chinese University in Hong Kong, as well as a number of independent laboratories, have conducted research and clinical trials about the effectiveness of saccharide isomerate on skin.

  • A 28-day clinical trial on 19 volunteers, aged 44 to 56 years showed that saccharide isomerate was capable of reducing the appearance of wrinkles by 18.5% to 79.3%. Healthy skin is rich in a natural blend of water-soluble compounds found only in the stratum corneum, but this moisture can it can be easily leached from the cells through water contact (washing/showering/bathing), which is why repeated contact with water actually makes the skin more dry. In contrast, saccharide isomerate is uniquely bound to the keratin of the stratum corneum. This unique binding mechanism ensures that the active ingredient is not washed off but continues to improve hydration until removed by the natural process of cell turnover.
  • In one 2-week study, a 32% improvement in hydration was seen on the forearm and a 40% improvement was seen on the calf following the use of test creams containing saccharide isomerate. Just 3 hours after a single application of saccharide isomerate, excessively dry skin areas were already much better hydrated. Moreover, when used twice every day over a 28 day period, all facial areas benefited from better hydration, and a calming or stressed urban skin. Hydration was clinically measured to last 72 hours.
  • Saccharide Isomerate used for a longer period helped develop proteins and help increase hyaluronic acid production in the skin by up to 66%. It improved the softness of the skin, and helped create a skin protection barrier to help improve inflamed skin.

Glycine Betaine (Beet Sugar Extract)

Glycine Betaine, or Beta Vulgaris (beet) sugar extract is a natural food grade moisturizer that is derived from a renewable source of beet sugar. Betaine is one of the four classes of osmolytes (compounds) that act to maintain intracellular hydration (water levels) helping to prevent damage from environmental stressors such as UV radiation and oxidation.

This important benefit allows the cells to function more efficiently to help prevent damage and the dehydration responsible for the look of parched, sallow, and discolored skin. Glycine Betaine is the single most effective key to adding moisture and hydration back to the skin. Unlike traditional humectants, which draw moisture from the environment, natural glycine betaine directly improves hydration due to its abundant source of saccharides. This is one of the most notable beet sugar benefits! Additionally, beet sugar extract hydrates from within, making it a suitable choice for any climate or environment.

Use of products containing this hydrating powerhouse allows for more soft, supple skin, with increased collagen production and elasticity. This cellular hydrating activity makes beet sugar extract the perfect choice for any formulas designed to support skin function and appearance, such as moisturizing body care, hair care, and facial skin care products.

The glycine betaine that we use is clinically proven to restore lost hydration and moisture. Hydration is critical for a more youthful appearance because skin may become wrinkled at any age, but dry, lackluster skin is a definite reflection of aging. Glycine Betaine also helps carry other humectants to the cells, as water will follow any osmolytes (sugars, betaine or amino acids) as they penetrate the cell.

Studies show that consumers using glycine betaine for six weeks increased the moisture content by a minimum of 40%.
