Summer Skin Care Tips: Vacation Tips for Skin Care in the Summer

Summer will soon be here, and that means sun, warmth, and — for some of us — travel! To make sure your skin enjoys Summer as much as you do, here are a few things you can do each day. Follow these Summer skin care tips and tricks to maintain healthy, soft skin and prevent a painful sunburn, so you can enjoy beautiful skin all Summer long!

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

Summer weather can give dry skin a little bit of a break. Warmer air means the absolute humidity is higher, so it’s easier for the skin to hydrate naturally. On the other hand, the activities we tend to do in the Summer, such as going outdoors and especially traveling, tend to decrease this benefit, or even reverse it. This can make skin care in the Summer challenging. If you’re traveling by air-conditioned plane or car, or plan to do any activities involving sweating or swimming, you’ll definitely need to moisturize, because all those things will dry out your skin.

To compensate for all the moisture lost during travel, follow these simple Summer skin care tips: Make sure to give your skin a thorough moisturizing the day and night before you head off, and take moisturizer with you to use during and after travel. We recommend our Pure Moisture Nourishing Face Cream and Awaken Revitalizing Eye Serum for smooth, hydrated skin while traveling to your destination, and Virgin Marula Oil for daily use while you’re away to keep your skin soft and smooth.

Protect Against the Sun

Hooray! You’ve arrived at your destination! Now you’re ready to head out and start exploring. Our next Summer skin care tips are all about sun exposure. Before you go out for the day, make sure you cover up as much as you can, so you won’t have to worry about sunburn later in the day. Prevention is the only true medicine for sunburn, which means that skin care in the Summer, when solar radiation is strongest, needs to feature sunscreen front and center!

Hat & Clothing

The simplest way to protect your skin is to cover it. Wear vivid and darker-colored clothing with a tight weave and sleeves to protect your delicate neck, back, and shoulders. A large hat with a brim at least three inches wide will go a long way towards shielding your forehead, nose, and ears.

Sunscreen

Possibly the most important of all Summer skin care tips: Wear sunscreen! For any uncovered skin, apply a 30+ SPF non-toxic sunblock 20 minutes before leaving your accommodation and again every couple of hours. An SPF 30 sunscreen will block 96.7% of ultraviolet rays and an SPF 50 sunscreen will block 98%.

There are many different active ingredients out there for sunscreen; we recommend going with zinc oxide. It’s extremely effective—NASA even uses it in UV glasses for its astronauts—and is a naturally-occurring compound that works by simply absorbing and neutralizing the solar radiation, just like clothing. Be sure to use plenty—don’t skimp!

Lip Balm

The last of our sunburn-based Summer skin care tips is to keep a moisturizing lip balm with SPF in your day bag so you can protect your lips and keep them plump and shiny all day long!

Keep Up Your Fluids

Two glasses of clear fluid with ice, citrus, mint, and straws.

You need to drink a lot more fluids for skin care in the Summer, to replace what you’re sweating out. The body loses a lot of water when the weather is warm and you’re more physically active, setting you up to feel blah or even get sick, and it dries your skin out too.

Here are our Summer skin care tips for hydration when you’re traveling:

Water!

Give yourself plenty of fresh water all day long. Even if you don’t feel thirsty, try to take a few gulps. Sometimes our thirst doesn’t register, and you may find, once you begin drinking, that you were a lot more parched than you realized.

Take Electrolytes

If it’s especially hot or if you’re going to be exercising for over an hour—which includes surfing, hiking, cycling, etc.—drink electrolytes in the form of a sports drink or electrolyte supplement packet to replace your body’s natural minerals and salts.

Eating fruits and vegetables and putting a little extra salt on your food also helps to replace those all-important electrolytes and keep your body hydrated (pink rock salt is best).

Avoid Alcohol

Lastly, minimize or avoid alcoholic beverages, especially while it’s still daytime. Alcohol dehydrates the body very badly, and the amount of water you’d need to drink to replace everything lost from the sun, exercise, and alcohol will leave you feeling bloated.

Keep Cool

In many desert cultures, people are most active in the mornings and evenings. That’s because they know to avoid the strongest heat of the day.

Keeping cool is one of the Summer skin care tips that is easier said than done. Sure, you could just sit inside next to the air conditioner all day, but that’s no way to enjoy Summer, especially if you’re traveling!

Instead, be smart about your exposure to heat, and try to concentrate outdoor activities and exercise during the cooler hours of the day. Save the afternoon and midday hours for indoor activities or resting.

By avoiding heat exhaustion and excessive sweating, you’ll protect your skin from drying out, becoming irritated, getting blotchy, and all of the other bad things that can happen to it when you’re dehydrated.

When You Get Home: Gentle Soap and Aloe Vera

After you’ve been about town or lazing on the beach, there are some Summer skin care tips you can apply back at home to help your skin recover and renew. Wash off the sunscreen, dirt, and any makeup with a gentle cleansing soap and moisturizing body bar. Our Travel Duo Mini Bars are perfect for taking with you. Pat your skin dry and apply aloe vera gel to any areas that had a little too much sun exposure and are looking pink (or burnt—but hopefully you’ve already avoided this by following the sun smart tips above!). Choose a pure aloe vera gel that is free of chemicals and apply two or three times a day until the burn is healed.
