You may have heard the buzz around beauty products being formulated with activated charcoal, but you might not know what it is or why we use it. If you’re curious about the benefits of activated charcoal, explore our blog to learn how it works.
What is Activated Charcoal?
Activated charcoal is not your daddy’s BBQ charcoal. That charcoal should never be used on skin! The charcoal used in skin care is a carbon from hardwood that is made in a process which adds oxygen to the carbon, creating a light fluffy black powder.
Benefits of Activated Charcoal
Today, you can find this charcoal at pharmacies in powder form and it can be used to alleviate stomach digestion and gas, but it’s also good to keep on hand for emergency poisoning of the family pooch. The charcoal has no odor, and it is tasteless.
Historically, activated charcoal has been used by indigenous people around the world for everything from teeth cleaning to packing wounds for healing. Native cultures also used it medicinally to help pull toxins from the body, a practice still used in hospitals today during cases of poisoning.
Benefits of Activated Charcoal in Skincare
Long before the craze of activated charcoal in masks and facial scrubs, our founder, Kirsten, was using activated charcoal to whiten her teeth. She had studied the use of charcoal around the world, and was fascinated with its antibacterial properties, as well as its ability to help draw dirt and impurities out of the skin.
She read the research to support charcoal reducing the size of pores, aiding in the treatment of acne, and soothing skin irritations. This was enough to get her excited, and she began adding it in the Ayr Skin Care formulations.
