According to Psychology Today, there’s just one thing you need to enjoy a longer and happier life. It has been scientifically proven that having an “attitude of gratitude” can do just that. That’s an awful lot of things! So what does an “attitude of gratitude” mean, and how can we have one?


Make a List

When people talk about a change in mindset, what they’re talking about it shifting awareness. Instead of waking up every day, and complaining about what we don’t have or what we don’t like about ourselves, gently shift your consciousness away from the negative and into the positive. You’ll soon discover how easy it is to live a better life when you try to see the good in yourself and others.

When we shift our energy from one of negativity, and start seeing the small, good things in our lives, we feel lighter and refreshed.


Write it Down

An easy way to become aware of things that you are grateful for and live a better life, is to start a gratitude journal. Any pad of paper or journal book will do. Just put it beside your bed and once a day, write ten things that you are grateful for. It can start out simple like:

  • I am grateful to be alive
  • I am grateful for the ability to see
  • I am grateful that I have my mental faculties
  • I am grateful that I have a husband/wife/friend/dog that loves me
  • I am grateful that I am free
  • I am grateful that I ate food today

As you continue this exercise, try not to list the same thing twice if you can. After a few weeks, you will find all kinds of interesting and thought provoking items on your list.


Live in the Present

Another thing you can do to promote a feeling of gratitude and live a better life, is to live in the present moment. When we spend energy and time focusing on mistakes, what happened in the past, or worrying about the future, we neglect the simple gift of the present.

When you find yourself getting stressed, ask yourself if you’re living in the present moment. If the answer is yes, and you are still stressed, ask yourself if there is anything you are grateful for right now. If you have had a particularly stressful day, your answer might be something like being grateful that you are breathing. You might have said it as a joke, but it’s a start!

Pay it Forward

Have you ever noticed how when someone smiles at you, it can be contagious? By simply spreading joy, we can help others live a better life, and find gratitude and joy. Open doors for strangers and give them a smile. If you see someone that looks lonely or unhappy, share a smile with them too. One smile begets another. Some people might ignore you, but overall people will be happy that you are being friendly. When you return home, your heart will be happier and feel lighter.

Volunteer

There is an energy about gratitude and joy, but there is also the possibility of having even more gratitude and joy in your life by donating your time or talents to others. In volunteering to help, you end up magnifying the energy of love and caring to others. You may find a charity group that you enjoy donating to, or volunteering with.


How Ayr Skin Care Helps

At Ayr Skin Care we have our own favorite organizations. One of them is the foster care program. We discovered that at 18 years old, the children in foster care are released from their home, and many end up in the streets with no job or place to live. It became important to us to help, so we found a local center that works with the young adults that come out of foster care and need help to live a better life.

The resource center has computers that young people can access to look for jobs, and they also have a kitchen that needs volunteers to cook. We have loved cooking there for many years — bringing joy, a smile, or just listening to the youth as they eat the lunch that we have prepared.


How Can You Volunteer?

If you’re wondering where you could volunteer to help others live a better life, Ayr Skin Care has tons of ideas. Perhaps you’d like to volunteer at a senior center or care facility. Many elderly patients have no one to visit them, and look forward to the smile from someone new. You can also join groups that focus on teaching and mentoring children.

No matter how bad things are for you, you can know that by helping someone else, you’ve made a difference in the world. Your own life has made an impact and changed someone else’s in a positive way. By cultivating a place for gratitude to grow in your life, you will glow from the inside out!


Who Are You Grateful For?

Are you grateful for a friend of many years? A spouse, a teacher, or someone else who makes you feel special? When was the last time you told them so? This week, let someone you care about know that they’ve made a measurable difference in your life. If you can, treat them to a small gift that shows how much you care — even just a phone call to brighten up their day.
