At Ayr Skin Care, we use chamomile. A lot. We like to drink chamomile tea. We use both chamomile essential oils and extracts in many of our products. Read on to learn why chamomile has so many skin care benefits!
What is it?
Chamomile is an herb, which comes from a shrub-like plant with lovely flowers that look like daisies. It grows wild in many countries throughout the world, and has therefore been used by many cultures for hundreds of years to treat medical conditions of many kinds. There are three types of chamomile: English chamomile (or Roman), German chamomile, and Moroccan chamomile. German and Roman are the two that are most widely known varieties used in natural medicine.
In terms of its skin care benefits, chamomile contains terpenoids and flavonoids, which act as free radical scavengers in the body. Free radicals are compounds that can result in damage to the DNA of the body. Antioxidants can help by stopping the compounds before they can damage the body. The less damage to the cells, the more anti-aging benefits. Cells that have less stress and damage are healthy and keep the immune system protected. Azulene and quercetin are the two more widely known compounds in chamomile, although there are many more.
How is it Used?
Chamomile is most often used in herbal teas. Its infusion in tea was found historically to help relieve the symptoms found in many digestive issues, as well as stress reduction. Compounds in chamomile have also been studied and found to help with an antispasmodic effect, quieting the mind and allowing sleep to occur. That’s why it’s used widely in the natural market as a sleeping aid.
Although the plant can be used as an infusion for tea, it is the concentrated goodness in the flowers that are harvested for essential oils and extracts. Known for its many benefits in skin care products, chamomile is most often seen in drug products that deal with dry, itchy, irritated skin, or to treat conditions like eczema. The natural corner of the beauty and skincare market began incorporating extracts and essential oils into products in the hopes that some of the benefits of the chamomile would come through into creams, lotions, and serums.
How Do We Use It?
At Ayr Skin Care, we love chamomile. We like to diffuse it around the house and breathe in the relaxing aromatherapy, and we love to add it to formulations in the lab. To harness its amazing benefits for skin care, chamomile is part of many of our formulations, including chamomile hydrosol, chamomile extracts (in oil or water) and both Roman and German chamomile essential oils. While we cannot make drug claims, we love incorporating herbs and essential oils into our products. Experience the benefits of chamomile in many of our products including our Calm Facial Bar (and travel bar), and our Awaken Revitalizing Eye Serum.
We've had some rainy days here recently, and a nice warm cup of chamomile tea sounds wonderful! Get your fireplace lit, or grab a comfy throw and cup of wonderful chamomile, and enjoy!
